About Copenhacks

The idea for CopenHacks came in mid-2015 by a student at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU): A Copenhagen Hackathon that would take place near the university, that had a focus on learning and fun, and that would be open to anyone interested in playing with innovative solutions and building awesome stuff. It would differ from other local Hackathons in that it would not ask participants/students to build on existing solutions or work on specific companies problems. Rather, the Hackathon would be focused on getting to meet fellow hackers, dedicate 24 hours on that one great idea, and give a weekend of opportunities to learn from other talented hackers.

CopenHacks was conceived with the intention of having both local and international students from many different backgrounds to come together to work on any project they like, using whichever tech they like, with the hopes of starting a more progressive, inviting, supportive, and enriching 'hacker' culture in Denmark.

What is CopenHacks?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Hackathon?

Hackathons are weekend-long technology festivals. Hundreds of passionate students come together, form teams, share ideas, and help each other build innovative applications. It's a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, learn from mentors, and make cool stuff. They're very beginner friendly. Everybody is there to help each other and have fun.

I'm a beginner and I can't code. Can I still come?

Yes! Of course! Hackathons are great for beginners! We'll have mentors on site to teach you lots of new skills and guide you towards creating your first hack. All the students are friendly and willing to help each other out. Come along to join the tens of thousands of student hackers worldwide.

What are the judging criteria?

Projects will be judged based on creativity, technical difficulty, polish and usefulness by a panel of industry judges and Microsoft employees.

What if I don't have (or want) a team?

That's fine! If you don't want a team, you don't need to form one AND if you want one, we will arrange a team building exercise before the start of the hackathon to help you get going. The team size is limited to 4 people maximum.

What is Major League Hacking?

Major League Hacking is the university hackathon league. They help support over 150 student hackathons every year across North America and Europe.

Who can attend?

Any student or recent graduate (up to a year) over 18 years may apply from any university in the world, and you do not need to study in a computer science related field.

How much does it cost?

Thanks to Microsoft and other sponsors, attendance is completely free, and we will provide you with as much food and drinks as you need.

What should I bring?

All attendees must bring a valid ID for admission. Other items to bring are laptops, mobiles, personal tech, chargers, a sleeping bag, and toiletries. If you want to shower, bring a towel!

Can I start before the event?

No. Doing that immediately disqualifies you from winning any prizes. You can think of ideas, just don't start building them. You can of course use libraries, frameworks, and templates.

Is there a code of conduct?

We are dedicated to providing a fun, harassment-free experience for everyone. We expect all of our attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and staff to be respectful and considerate of others. They are all required to agree with this gate.io api key. You should read this code. Organizers will enforce it throughout the event.

Where does COPENHACKS take place?

CopenHacks takes place inside the fancy, Microsoft building in Kongens Lyngby, Copenhagen, Denmark (that also houses the Microsoft Development Center). The building is the workplace of hundreds of Microsoft employees from all over the world, and the facilities are both modern and elegant.

The infrastructure is guaranteed to support tons of guests simultaniously connecting the network; there will be plenty of wonderful food and drink; there is even a quiet room to sleep, a locker room with showers, a gaming area with xboxes and VR headsets, and if that is not enough, the building is in the heart of Lyngby, a beautiful area full of shops, restaurants, and even a cinema close to the local Technical University.
